According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics’ 2000 Census, 12,200 new laboratory professionals will be needed annually to meet the critical need across the nation. However only 4,000-6,000 will join the workforce each year.
Bachelor of Science
This unique program combines the basic sciences of biology and chemistry with medicine and the clinical sciences. The result: a valuable academic program that translates into a satisfying professional career. Graduates are prepared to be medical laboratory scientists (MLS), also known as medical technologists (MT).
The Medical Technology program is offered in conjunction with Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. The program consists of two years of prerequisite courses in the basic sciences and liberal arts, a third year of liberal arts and professional courses in laboratory medicine, and a fourth year which integrates professional and clinical practicum courses at the Sinai Hospital campus. Unlike other programs in the state, our program includes a management practicum in the fourth year, preparing students for leadership positions.
With a degree in medical technology, you will be qualified to work in all areas of the clinical laboratory, including microbiology, chemistry, hematology, molecular biology, blood banking, and immunology. Graduates in the Medical Technology major earn a Bachelor of Science degree and are eligible to take the national certification examination for medical laboratory scientists offered by the Board of Certification of the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and to pursue graduate study in Medical Technology or any of its related areas.
