Purpose: There is a critical shortage of Medical Technologists (Medical Laboratory Scientists) nationwide which will worsen after 2008 when sizeable numbers of the current laboratory professional workforce are expected to retire. This training program provides rapid training for individuals who possess a bachelor's degree in biology, biotechnology, chemistry or other basic science to enter the clinical laboratory workforce. The length of the program is three semesters if the student has all required prerequisite coursework.
Students who successfully complete all the requirements of a structured program in one of the specialty disciplines under the auspices of a NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology Program will receive a Certificate of Completion and are eligible to take a categorical examination for certification as Categorical Medical Technologists through the American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification and/or the National Credentialing Agency.
An applicant must have obtained a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry and, meet all admission criteria for the certificate program.
