Disability Services
Stevenson University admits qualified students regardless of disability and welcomes students with disabilities into every area of life within the University. Students are encouraged to contact the Office of Academic Support Services (443-334-2332) during the application process or after acceptance to the University.
What is a disability?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a disability as a medical or psychiatric condition that limits one or more life activities. Services are available to students at Stevenson University who have a disability as defined under the ADA.
Examples of a disability can include:
- a mobility, visual or hearing impairment
- a learning disability
- a psychiatric or medical condition
Requesting Services
To request academic support services at SU, you must complete the following three steps:
- Before the academic semester begins you must self-identify to receive accommodations and related services. You can do this by contacting the Office of Academic Support Services at 443-334-2332.
- Meet with a disability counselor to learn more about available services at Stevenson University. This is also an opportunity for the counselor to get to know you and assess how best to meet your needs.
- Have a qualified professional provide the Office of Academic Support Services with recent documentation stating the nature of your disability (diagnosis), how it affects you in an academic setting, and a list of possible accommodations. Examples of documentation include letters from a treating physician or documentation from your previous high school.
Requests for services must be made prior to each semester that you are enrolled, even if you have previously received services. We recommend that you request services as soon as possible so that your weekly schedule can be arranged to allow time for transportation and to make accommodations for disability-related needs.
Services Provided
Stevenson University provides academic support services based on the needs presented by the disability. These services may include, but are not limited to:
- Extended time on quizzes, tests, and exams
- Notice to teachers explaining necessary accommodations
- The use of recording devices, spell check tools and/or calculators in class and/or on exams
- Assistance registering for classes
- Preferential class seating
- Sign language assistance
- Access to on-campus computers that are programmed for enlarged print and graphics
- Referrals to other resources such as health services, rehabilitation facilities, and counseling options
