9.22.23 Tropical Storm Update

Tropical Storm: Campus Safety Information for Stevenson Students

Dear Stevenson Students,

As you may have seen, we are expecting tropical storm conditions in our region starting after midnight tonight and through Saturday. Heavy rain up to 2-4 inches and sustained winds of 12-18 MPH with gusts up to 40 MPH are expected. Please use caution if you are out and about.

Power outages resulting from high winds, wet ground, and downed trees are possible. BGE has predicted possible power outages occurring between 2-6AM tomorrow morning, but restoration of power by BGE can take longer.

To help you prepare for the conditions we could face, Residence Life asks you to review the following information carefully:

  • Charge Cell Phones & Digital Devices

It is essential that you fully charge your devices. If power or landline phones go down, cell phones, text messaging, emails, and web posts will be our main source of communication.

  • SU Alert & Campus Emergency Updates

Campus emergency information and updates will be sent via SU Alert text, SU email, posted on the www.stevenson.edu homepage, and on the SU Now Portal at https://now.stevenson.edu/. If you have not signed up for SU Alert texts, please do so today at https://www.stevenson.edu/about/campus-services/alert/.

  • Windows in Residence Halls

All residence hall windows must remain closed for the duration of this storm. Failure to keep them closed could result in leaks and damage to your rooms and the rooms of others.

  • Flashlights

Each student should provide their own flashlight to be used during a power failure. Do not use candles or other flame-type lighting under any circumstances—they are a fire hazard. Students who use candles will be held accountable through the student conduct process.

  • Dining Services

In expectation of stormy conditions and possible power outages, Dining Services is prepping sandwiches, wraps, other cold bar items, and canned and bottled beverages to be available to students on Saturday. The Rockland Marketplace will operate under normal brunch hours Saturday, 9:30am -1:30pm for brunch and 5-7pm for dinner, but Pandini’s and the Coffee House may be closed. We also encourage you to get some pre-packaged, non-perishable food items and bottled water to keep in your rooms.

  • Vehicles & Campus Parking

Students who have cars on campus should set the emergency brake, close all windows, and park in the designated student parking areas until after the storm. All vehicles should be parked away from trees. Additionally, please use caution when driving. High winds and heavy rain can lead to downed limbs, fallen trees, debris, and flash-flooding on roads.

  • Elevator Service

In the event of power failure, there will be no elevator service, but emergency lighting will activate in halls and stairways. Residents with mobility challenges should contact their Resident Assistant or Campus Safety at 443-352-4500 for assistance.

  • Campus Emergency Contacts

If you need assistance or have an emergency, please contact the Office of Campus Safety in the Ratcliffe Community Center at 443-352-4500. Campus Safety staff are available 24/7/365.

In addition, please report all accidents or injuries, broken windows, leaks, or other facilities emergencies during the storm to Campus Safety at 443-352-4500.

  • Fitness Centers, Bookstore, Mailroom

Due to the winds and potentially hazardous conditions, campus Fitness Centers will be closed Saturday. The Bookstore and Mailroom will be open unless storm conditions and power outages do not permit.

  • Cancelled/Postponed Activities & Events

Saturday’s Football vs. Widener has been moved to Sunday, 12:30 PM in Mustang Stadium, and Saturday’s Women’s Soccer vs. FDU-Florham has been moved to Sunday, 5 PM in Mustang Stadium. Fall Festival scheduled for the Suites Quad has been cancelled for Saturday, and we will notify you if it is rescheduled. Student Activities will notify students if the trip to see The Wiz tomorrow needs to be postponed due to the inclement weather.

Your safety is our first priority. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Campus Safety at 443-352-4500, Residence Life at 443-334-2588, or a Residence Life staff member.

Thank you and stay safe,

Bradley Donovan
