Providing unique learning opportunities and cultural experiences, Stevenson's Music Program greatly enhances campus life. No major is offered in Music, however a number of musical ensembles and courses are available. Interested students are encouraged to participate in the University's Music Program as an extracurricular activity or for course credit. Auditions are required for participation in the ensembles, but students must have prior background, either singing in a chorus or performing instrumental music. Student musicians can choose from several different ensembles:
Greenspring Valley Orchestra
Directed by Robert J. Suggs, D.M.A., Professor of Music, the orchestra has become one of the most respected amateur organizations of its type in the Baltimore area. The orchestra performs winter and spring concerts as well as a popular outdoor summer series. It is an advanced ensemble specializing in the performance of standard classics and well as pop favorites.
Directed by Jared Denhard, this ensemble plays music in the style of blues, traditional, swing, Latin, bebop, world music and jazz-rock. Emphasis is placed on improvisation, playing published charts, and original compositions and arrangements.
Directed by Robert J. Suggs, D.M.A. and Jared Denhard, Adjunct Instructor of Music, the chorus performs the widest possible variety of choral music, including Renaissance madrigals, classical works, show tunes, and contemporary popular music.
Stevenson occasionally stages spring musicals featuring a large number of singers and instrumentalists.
Directed by the Stevenson University Director of Bands, Mark Lortz, the concert band is offered as a two-credit fine arts course. The Concert Band performs large ensemble works providing members with a variety of repertoire, including popular settings, unique repertoire, and non-traditional collaborations.
